What is family learning?
Family learning describes activities:
- where family members learn together – this could be mothers, fathers, grandparents or anyone who cares for the child
- that are short workshops, for example on messy play or making puppets or part of a longer programme.
- where there are planned learning outcomes for both children and adults.
Benefits of family learning include:
- Improved educational outcomes for children
- An effective way of engaging parents in their children’s learning and in the life of the setting
- Improved communication between parents and practitioners and more continuity between the setting and home
- A first step back into learning for parents
- Improved relationships between parents and children.
